Just about every team has one of those players that seem to never get a sustained chance to play despite showing some skill. He's that guy for Philly. Trade makes some sense on both sides. sharks get a player who could probably score 15-18 goals if given a chance and ice time and flyers get good value for a player they didn't seem to want.

I hope you're right FA30. Sharks could use a player like that.

Plus, once McGinn becomes useful, we can trade him to the Avs for two spare parts*..... ;-)

(*I actually think Winnik is a decent player)

I'd say his ceiling is lower than his brothers, but he has the tools to be a solid defensive player who can put up ~30 points a year. Not too sad to see him go as a flyers fan, he had a couple of good chances with the big club but never made a good enough impression to stick around. Put up modest numbers with the phantoms over the years.

Here's what to expect from Tye McGinn...

At least 1 or 2 seasons of 15-20 goals if given playing time. A nice addition on the 3rd line and possibly a nice player to shuffle in with some skilled players.

I see Patrick Sharp all over again. Same situation, when called up provides some scoring, but in reality the Flyers prefer to go with the guys they are paying money that aren't performing. So the young player gets dealt because there is "no room" for them in the lineup.

Congratulations San Jose you probably got a steal. Can't wait to think back about this in 3-5 years.

McGinn is slow and not good defensively. This won't be a Pat Sharp type acquisition.

1) Tye is not a fast skater, but he is not Hartnell. Actually McGinn is a better skater than B. Schenn.

2) If you mean bad defensively as in...I just looked at his +/- stats, so he's bad than ehhhh. Actually one of the reasons he got shots in the NHL because he was safer in his own end then others. It was his offensive game that needed work.

3) No matter how you want to justify it, it's 100% a "Sharp trade" already. It's been done. Tye had zero chance of getting a spot with the current lineup. I actually remember watching Sharp in 03, all those centers coming and going while never giving him a shot. I could be wrong, but I believe that was the year Justin Williams got traded for Markov. So when Flyer fans complain about trading away youth, the ones that hurt the flyers are not the Carters and Richards. It's the guys they never give a chance that flourish. Maybe Patrick Maroon's past year was a fluke....who knows.

Funny. Not too long ago Hawks fans were saying the same thing to Sabre fans...most of whom laughed at us.

You want Sharp back? B. Schenn or Couturier and he's all yours.

San Jose fans will love him. He was in the doghouse in Philly. We sent him to the minors when he was leading the team in goals. Kid has skill and goes to the net fearlessly

Excited for Tye McGinn here in San Jose. Disgusted by the John Scott signing. Not too pleased overall with the Sharks offseason to this point, but the McGinn addition is a nice move.

You got a fourth line guy who can fill in on the third line if you have injuries. Physical, a big body around the net, good along the boards and has an engine that never quits. He'll block shots and score you a goal once and awhile. Character guy.

as a flyers fan i fully agree with this blog.

Tye was never given a real chance, and when he was he played quite well for a prospect.

considering his age and small contract, i do not understand why philly never gave him a true chance.

he is a heart and soul player with solid skills.

Think of a VERY poor mans version of scott hartnell without the stupid penalties hartnell takes. tye doesnt have the scoring ability as hartnell but plays a similar grinder/power forward role, who is feisty and great at being presence in front of the net.

sad to see him go.

I was not among them.

He filled his role for a bit. But a guy that was once unbeatable in a scrap was made to look human on numerous occasions this past season. The final straw was the Justin Johnson fight:

He could never play the game of hockey, that's for sure.

My sentiments exactly. I love the style of guys like Mike Brown. Cant stand the style of guys like John Scott. Waste of roster space, salary, gear, food etc...

Wilson described McGinn well by saying he's an honest player. He'll score some goals going to the net, he's good offensively in that way. He won't drive possession of the puck but he can forecheck hard and can help a line score by playing a good net front game.

My long term projections were that best case he turned into a Travis Moen type of player, and worst case he would remain an occasional AHL call-up who could help a bit offensively when needed.
